Following a multi-million immigration scam a few days ago in Dubai, a Filipino national running an immigration company in Abu Dhabi, after swindling UAE expats to the tune of Dh20,000 to Dh30,000 by promising them jobs in Canada, performed a Houdini act. Victims had reportedly sold their lands in their home countries to shell out money to the company. Clariza Alban, a Filipino working in the hospitality sector in the UAE, was quoted by Khaleej Times as saying that she had sold her land in the Philippines to fulfil her dream of working and living in Canada. After losing all her money, she says she is ashamed of even talking to her mother. She is said to have paid a total of Dh25,000 to the company, which had promised to send her to Canada.

Another Filipino worker in Abu Dhabi, Mario Calimag, had borrowed money from his relatives in his home country, in addition to selling his land, to pay Dh22,800 to the company in 2012. He said that it was his dream to find a better job overseas, and adds that he feels sad and cheated now. The mobile numbers of both the managing director and the administrative officer, both nationals of the Philippines, were switched off when a reporter of Khaleej Times tried to get in touch with them. To add to it, the Canadian company they claimed to be affiliated to was also not traceable. When the Canadian company was searched for online, the results were redirected to the same company based in Abu Dhabi. Some victims told Khaleej Times that the managing director was available on WhatsApp until June.

According to Sohayle Ramoas, another victim who shelled out Dh22,800 said the managing director had asked them to be patient whenever they contacted her with regard to the status of their applications. In the first week of July, Khaleej Times exposed two more Dubai-based companies which had engaged in similar kind of fraudulent activities. The companies, Oracle Visa and World Migrations, had reportedly cheated customers by offering overseas jobs after pilfering millions. Their offices have been sealed by DED (Dubai Economic Department) in Business Bay.
